espresso + pour over
how might we create an enjoyable experience that embraces the craft of both types of coffee making
the consumer
small space, mid-level enthusiast
initial prototyping
bought and broke down both a drip coffee machine and an espresso machine and used foam core to define best architecture
base construction direction
reservoir is routed to both systems in the back of machine with an exposed handle. the espresso main block is housed to the left of the reservoir and connected to group head in front. the pour over hose and heating component are housed in the middle, with the drip basket and shower head on the right.
dialing the details
after working through the best construction, I started looking into how to carry it through the design of both the machine and accessories. The ideas of "front facing interactions" for the machine and elevating the experience of the accessories were the priorities.
machine
the middle dial is water control which gives power to either espresso or pour over. the espresso side has controls for flow rate and steam, and the pour-over side has an amount slider, and a pull tab for the basket, and a glass window to show the coffee being made
reservoir
two grab points allow for both enjoyable initial pull and easy carry. the opening button & mechanism is easily accessible to thumb and allows for both in and out of machine fill
pitcher
design language applied through a silicone wrap attached to hand side, a silicone wrap prevents overheating yet allows for temperature monitoring
portafilter
the portafilter incorporates the design language with the attachment between handle and portafilter
mug
over-molded grip allows for holding a controlled and enjoyable experience, a small spout and inset base carry design language
